Bruxism and TMJ massage in Málaga
Do you clench or grind your teeth, wake up with a tired jaw, or get headaches that seem to start in your face or neck? Bruxism and tension in the jaw joint (TMJ) are much more common than people think, and stress usually makes them worse.
At Sport Massage Isabelle there is a dedicated treatment for jaw tension and headaches: a 60-minute massage focused on the muscles of the jaw, face, neck and shoulders.
It complements the work of your dentist or physiotherapist rather than replacing it. If you wear a night guard, you can keep using it as usual.
Why does the jaw get so tight?
The muscles that close your mouth, such as the masseter and the temporalis, are among the strongest in the body. When you clench your teeth at night or during the day, they work non-stop and build up tension.
That tension can spread to the temples, face, neck and shoulders, and it's linked to many tension headaches. Massage helps these muscles relax and breaks the cycle of tension.
Does any of this sound familiar?
This treatment may help if you notice any of the following:
At night, when concentrating or when you're stressed.
Or with pain in your face, temples or ears.
Especially ones that start at the temples, the back of the head or behind the eyes.
When opening your mouth, chewing or yawning.
What does the treatment include?
Each session starts with a short chat about your symptoms and is adapted to what you need that day.
Jaw muscles
Work on the masseter, temporalis and the other muscles involved in clenching.
Gentle intraoral techniques
Only when appropriate and always with your consent: work from inside the mouth, with gloves, to reach muscles that can't be reached from outside.
Face and head
Releasing the facial muscles and temples, where tension tends to build up.
Neck and shoulders
Massage of the neck and shoulders, which often tighten along with the jaw.
60 minutes: €70. More information on treatments and prices.

Bruxism massage FAQ
Does massage cure bruxism?
No. Bruxism has several causes and should be assessed by your dentist. Massage helps the muscles relax and eases the tension and discomfort it causes, and it works well alongside a night guard and any treatment you've been given.
Does jaw massage hurt?
It can feel intense on the tightest points, but the pressure is adjusted throughout. Just say if it's too much.
What is intraoral work?
Gentle techniques applied from inside the mouth, with gloves, to reach jaw muscles that can't be reached from outside. They're only used if they're right for you and you agree.
Can I have the massage if I have inflammation in my mouth?
No. We don't do the massage while there is inflammation in the mouth: it needs to heal first. If you have inflammation or discomfort in your mouth, let us know when you book and we will reschedule.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the person. Many people feel relief after the first session; if the tension is long-standing, a few sessions close together at first, then spaced out, can help.
